Options for tile showers: Porcelain or ceramic?

When planning a new bathroom shower tile, you’ll most likely ask if it’s better to use porcelain or ceramic. But, of course, they both have their uses.

We want you to have answers, so we’ll describe each one. Then, we’ll explain the pros of each so you can make a good decision regarding your tile showers.

About porcelain

Porcelain is a type of ceramic but couldn’t behave differently. Porcelain’s composition includes not only clay but also sand and glass.

The result is a dense and heavier tile. The main difference, however, is the absorption rate.

Porcelain’s clay is nonabsorbent, making it ideal for such a wet room. It is used mainly as a shower floor tile, especially in busy, highly trafficked rooms.

Porcelain comes in various colors, patterns, and designs, making it a good possibility for wall installations.

This large format tile can be made to look like anything; it’s often preferred for marble and other stone looks, as well as wood echoes.

About Ceramic

These tiles are thinner, usually glazed, and always highly designed. You’ll see these mostly on walls and backsplashes.

While the glazing makes them tough, they are best on indoor-only floors in moderately busy rooms. It’s essential always to get the correct strength levels, especially for tile showers.

Be sure to tell the tile expert exactly how you plan to use them. The right or wrong tile will impact your remodeling project.

Wall vs. Floor Tile

It’s essential to understand the difference: wall tiles are thinner and not meant to withstand the weight. They’re also more slippery.
